SWASAM FOUNDATION

I ,Dr. S.Thirunavukkarasu,MBBS,DLO,DNB (ENT), Consultant Pediatric

ENT & Airway Surgeon ,started my carrier as ENT surgeon and came to know there are a

significant number of Patients ,especially children suffering with Airway (Breathing pipe)

problems. They are either born with Airway problems (congenital) or Acquired ,mainly after

Endotracheal Intubation and ventilation. With great advancement of manage ment in medical field

particularly in ICUs and NICUs,we are saving a lot of critically ill patients with various diseases. So

the number of patients with morbidity especially airway related stenosis also are increasing. These

patients are either being let t o die or temporarily managed by tracheostomy (hole in the neck)

bypassing upper airway ,compromising quality of life .We need to reconstruct the airway to

permenantly remove the tracheostony tube from the neck.Unfortunately It can be done only in

tertiary care centres and needs a multi disciplinary team work consisting of Airway surgeon,Airway

Anesthesiologist, Intensivists,Pulmonologists. I took up the challenge because properly done

reconstruction can give symptom free life of 70 to 80 years for children with airway problems.I

went to Switzerland ,got trained in one of the pioneering centres in this field and started doing

Laryngotracheal reconstructive surgeries at Kanchi kamakoti CHILDS trust hospital in 2013 and

expanded my work to other tertiary care c entres in th city ( Rainbow Children’s hospital,Apollo

Children’s hospital and Dr.Mehta’s hospital). Now Im able to cater to the paitents from all over the

state and neighbouring states as well. The cost of the Surgery, prolonged ICU and hospital stay are

q uiet high.Unfortunately majority of these patients are very poor and there is no government

hospital to manage these complex patients at present.

Keeping this in mind we started a non profit charitable trust call ed

Swasam foundation in 2018 with main objectives of giving financial help to poor patients with

airway problems,so that reducing the burden of the family and improving quality of airway

management through research.Training more people in this field to cat er larger population is one of

our long term goals.Reaching out to the community to create awareness in endemic pockets of

Salem,Dharmapuri, krishnagiri districts where suicidal tendencies runs in families.Though they are

successflly treated in local hospi tals, most of them surviving with morbidity due to Endotracheal

intubation and ventilation. It impose tremendous burden for the family and society.Hence prevention

and management of morbiditeis are vital. We ( swasam foundation ) hope and wish that we grow

holistically to contribute meaningfully to the society .I am willing to work with other organizations

to improve the quality of life of airway patients and ultimately reduce the burden of the family and

society.
